For the past eight years Dr. Byron Harrell has served as Managing Partner of Philoptima Consulting, a strategic advisor to private foundations. Byron was formerly the President of a large private foundation in New Orleans.Author of “Supercharged Giving: The Professionals Guide to Strategic Philanthropy”, and the newsletter "The Strategic Philanthropist", he is passionate about boosting grantmaking outcomes through the latest applied research.
Dr. Harrell also wrote “Size Matters: Why Large Foundations Perform Poorly” published in Philanthropy magazine about the ground-breaking discovery of an inverse relationship between the size of a foundation and its effectiveness. The bigger the foundation, the worse the performance.
Dr. Harrell served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Southeastern Council of Foundations headquartered in Atlanta. Through his extensive network, he consults on a wide range of strategic, governance, and operational issues in private foundations and is a frequent lecturer and advisor to nonprofits and grantmakers.
