Glossary

Frequently used terms:

.Prize Makers:These are grant makers, donors, foundations, corporations, and philanthropists, who are the only types of persons who can fund either Design Prizes or Implementation Prizes. Once they join Philoptima, they are collectively referred to as Prize Makers. They are also able to submit problems in order to get suitable solutions from Faculty Members (see Researchers).

.Researchers:These must join and become Philoptima Faculty members to do anything on the site above that of the general user (in particular to enter the Faculty domain). Faculty Members can propose solutions to the Design Prizes funded by Prize Makers and be paid an Award for submitting a winning solution.

.Nonprofits:These are nonprofit organizations who submit Implementation Plans in response to Open Implementation Prizes funded by Prize Makers. Nonprofits can also submit Unfunded Design Prizes for Prize Makers to consider adopting and funding by donation to a Philoptima subsidiary nonprofit corporation known as “Philoptima Resources” which will occupy a page under the “Donate” navigation tab on the Philoptima Home Page.

.General Users:These are registered users of the Philoptima website who will get regular news, prize alerts, announcements, and updates from Philoptima.

.Administrator:The Philoptima web-master who can manage the Prize Makers, Faculty Members and Researchers, Nonprofits, General Users, and most if not all of the site content.

.Visitors:These are general Internet users, web surfers, not necessarily registered users. The word “Visitor” will be used as a collective noun describing all parties (Prize Makers, Researchers, Faculty Members, Nonprofits, registered users, and unregistered users).

.Temporary Privileges:Temporary Privileges are only granted to Researchers applying for admission to the Philoptima Faculty in order for them to immediately see all of the details in the various posted Open Design Prizes and create a password protected work folder. After Philoptima examines the application and decides to admit or reject the application, the work folder is either closed and deleted, or, the Researcher is officially admitted and is there after referred to as a Faculty Member. Temporary Privileges are not used anywhere else on the site.

.Faculty Member With Full Privileges:A researcher whose application has been accepted by Philoptima and whose "Temporary Privileges" have been removed; this means this user will be able to access all the facilities that are exposed to a researcher member of the Philoptima Faculty.
